What is training dog caring

When our dogs are in the final stages of their formal training program, they often need time to rest and relax during their downtime.

These dogs are adult dogs over 12 months of age who need a home to take it easy overnight during the week and throughout the weekend.

Since they are in full-time training with our instructors, they have extra guidelines to follow to ensure they don’t interrupt their journey to being matched with a client who is blind or has low vision. They are generally not permitted to travel on public transport, access public places or go to the dog park.

Victoria: Training Dog carers are required to be able to drop the dog to our training centre daily in Kensington* between 7am and 8.30am and pick them up between 3pm-7pm Monday to Friday.

We also have opportunities in Victoria for short term relief care placements for dogs in their formal training stage who are not being actively trained. These care placements could range from a few weeks up to a few months, and carers will not have to drop the dogs on site as often. The dogs in this care may be on medical rest or waiting for a client match or client training. To find out more about relief care options or apply now head to our relief care page.

*For carers in Ringwood, Belgrave, Belgrave South and Belgrave Heights, your local instructor will be responsible for the pick-up and drop-off.

Queensland: Our trainers will collect the dogs from your home in the morning (Monday to Friday) and drop them back in the afternoon daily.

New South Wales: Our trainers will collect the dogs from your home in the morning (Monday to Friday) and drop them back in the afternoon daily. While the dogs are generally in training Monday to Friday, this may vary from three to five days per week, hence we are looking for volunteers who are flexible to care for the dogs on some weekdays, as well as week nights and evenings.

Currently available in:

  • VIC: Metro Melbourne region with the ability to travel to Kensington* on weekdays for pick up and drop off.
  • QLD: Sunshine Coast region and surrounding suburbs
  • NSW: Woy Woy, Umina Beach, Ettalong Beach, Booker Bay, Blackwall, Horsfield Bay, Woy Woy Bay, Kariong, Koolewong, Tascott, Point Clare, West Gosford, Gosford, North Gosford, East Gosford, Point Frederick, Wyoming.

To proceed with this application, all details must be of the primary carer only.

Thanks for your interest in puppy caring. Our carer admin team is taking a break over the holiday season (however our puppies are in the wonderful hands of carers, on site staff and volunteers). We look forward to process new applications when the office reopens on January 8. We will be in touch with all new applicants in the new year. Thank you for your patience. Have a safe and happy festive season.
